Post Earthquake Support

The situation:
On April 15, 2015 and May 12, 2015 earthquakes struck Nepal, killing over 9000 people and injuring more than 25,000. More than 500,000 were displaced, many from rural areas. Many of the rural health centers were destroyed or unsafe to utilize, leaving much of the population without care.
In addition to this disaster, Nepal was already dealing with a fragile reproductive health system especially in the rural areas. While Nepal had made strides in improving maternal and neonatal mortality, the rates are still considered critical and much work needs to be done to ensure better outcomes.
Our work:
In association with the Midwifery Society of Nepal we are working to help ensure the women whose lives were uprooted after the earthquakes in 2015 receive skilled midwifery care. Our support includes helping secure supplies, equipment, training and the services of skilled midwives.
In early summer of 2015 we sent a team to assess the situation and meet with MIDSON to develop a program that will assist the urgent needs during the recovery phase after the earthquake as well as look to the future to improve maternal health care in the rural areas. Due to the efforts of Global Orphan Prevention we were able to also help ensure one safe place for women to labor and birth after their health clinic was destroyed. But we need to do more.
