Stories of a Traveling Midwife- Turkey 11/2016
"...As all women do, these mothers suffer from miscarriages, stillbirths, infertility, and terrible accidents. The difference for refugees is they don’t just feel alone; they often are alone. Treatment for women’s health issues is difficult to come by and they may go years without care from a midwife or doctor. They may go to the hospital if they are about to deliver a baby, but they will be sent back to their tent the same day, with no follow up care or explanation in their own language...."
Haiti - Hurricane Matthew
Midwife Time - Haiti 2016
"...On the ride in this morning I realized it was easier to count the houses that are still standing and live-able than the ones that aren’t. On a long dirt road stretch close to the clinic, there was maybe one house still intact out of every dozen. A roof blown off is so much different than a roof collapsed. Tarps and other make shift roofs are going up in the places they’re possible, where entire walls haven’t been blown out or trees fallen. But most of the babies had perfectly normal exams and mamas dedicated to making sure they are healthy!"

"I have been watching these women from MIDSON work tirelessly day and night dealing with earthquake related issues and I want to do more... But I am beginning to see the bigger picture here. And while I thought we were going to help with acute disaster relief, I see now our role will be assisting with more chronic and deep rooted issues that have led to this crisis in maternal/child health within Nepal."

This journey quickly made me realize, "You may not always end up where you thought you were going, but you will always end up where you are meant to be." ~Unknown
