Who they are: The Fremo Medical and Birth Centre is the home of a beautiful and safe haven for the mothers of the Kawangware slum on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. Here women come to be cared for during pregnancy and birth by kind and compassionate staff with a commitment to safety and respect.
In 2010 the medical clinic was set up by two young men, Fred and Moffat, brothers and partners in this great venture. A few years later they were joined by Australian midwife Vicki Chan and together, they set up the Birth Centre and changed the way birth happened and thus the lives of the women and families of Kawangware and now a new centre which opened in 2021 in Kaberia, another community that struggles with poverty and lack of healthcare resources. With over 3000 births since their inception, they are making a valuable impact on these communities. Global Midwife Response (then Midwife Pilgrim) partnered with FreMo in 2015 and launched our mentorship program in 2018 which supports not only FreMo but helps prepare global midwives for this work.
They now boast birth outcomes comparable in safety to any Western birthplace as measured by maternal and neonatal mortality while keeping intervention and complications to an astonishing low. All this has been achieved with a bare minimum of funds which, supported by friends and family throughout the world, has seen the clinic grow and now able to offer running water, reliable electricity, linen, soap, toilets, and a shower - some things that even the local government hospitals don't offer.
What we are doing: We are currently assisting FreMo Medical and Birth Centre with their staffing needs. They have been providing compassionate midwifery care to women in the Kawangware slum in Nairobi, Kenya and now also in Kaberia, Nairobi, Kenya. Their focus on informed choice, compassionate care, dignity and comfort while striving to establish a sustainable model for their community is one Midwife Pilgrim is proud to support.
